.com vs .in: Which Domain Extension Should You Register?
.com vs .in: Which Domain Extension Should You Register?
If you are starting a business in India, one of the first questions is: should I register a .com or a .in? Both are excellent choices — the right one depends on your audience and goals. Here is a clear comparison.
.com — the global default
.com is the most recognised extension in the world. People instinctively type ".com" after a brand name, and it carries built-in trust and credibility. If you plan to serve customers internationally — or you just want the safest, most familiar option — .com is the one to get.
.in — built for India
.in is India's country-code domain. It instantly signals that you are an Indian business, which builds local trust. Crucially, because it is newer and India-specific, far more good names are still available on .in than on .com — so you can often get the exact brand name you want.
Does the extension affect SEO?
For local search, a ccTLD like .in can give a mild geo-targeting signal to Google for Indian audiences. For everything else, search rankings depend far more on your content, speed, and backlinks than on the extension. Neither .com nor .in will hold you back.
Pricing and availability
.in domains are typically cheaper to register and renew than .com, and have much better availability for short, brandable names. .com tends to cost a little more and the best names are long gone.
The smart move: register both
Most established brands register both .com and .in (and often .co.in too), then point the secondary ones to their main site. This protects your brand, stops competitors grabbing them, and captures visitors who type either extension. At a few hundred rupees a year, it is cheap insurance.
