How to Host a Website Made with Claude or ChatGPT on Your Domain
Built a website with Claude, ChatGPT or Google AI Studio? Export the files, upload them to hosting, connect your own .in or .com domain and get free SSL.
To host a website made with Claude, ChatGPT or Google AI Studio on your own domain, download the files the AI wrote, upload them to a web hosting plan and point your domain at that hosting. A simple AI-made site is usually one index.html file plus a few images, so the cheapest shared hosting plan runs it, and free SSL switches on once the domain points to the server. Apps that need a server of their own, such as newer Lovable projects or anything that calls an AI API with a secret key, need a different home, covered below.
What you actually have: one HTML file, a folder of files or a full app
Work out which of these you have first; it decides where the site can live.
| What the AI gave you | How to recognise it | Where it can live |
|---|---|---|
| One HTML file | A single file, often index.html, with the CSS and JavaScript inside it | Any web hosting plan |
| A folder of static files | index.html plus folders such as css, js or images | Any web hosting plan |
| A project that needs building | A package.json file, a src folder and files ending .jsx or .tsx | Build it on your computer, then upload the output |
| An app with a server | Logins, its own database, or calls to an AI or payment API with a secret key | A VPS, or the platform that built it |
Most landing pages, portfolios, menus and price lists made in a chat are the first or second kind: the easy case.
Why a share link or an ai.studio address isn't enough for a business
Every AI tool can share what it built: fine for showing a draft, a weak home for a business. As of October 2026:
- Claude. Only artifacts made in a chat before 16 September 2026 can still be published as a public link anyone can open. Newer ones can be shared by link, but Anthropic's sharing guide says everyone who opens one needs a Claude account, so most customers couldn't see it. The guide describes no way to attach your own domain.
- ChatGPT Sites. In public beta on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, it hosts sites on addresses like
yourname.openai.chatgpt.site. Its documentation says custom domains work only where available, that Sites doesn't register domains for you, and that plan usage limits can stop a busy Site staying public. - Google AI Studio. Publishing gives you a Google Cloud Run address, and you can also pick a subdomain under
ai.studio, first come, first served, which is released if you unpublish or delete the app, according to Google's deployment docs. They mention no way to use your own domain.
The real issue is control. The site is tied to a subscription, a fast-changing product and someone else's address. A domain you own, with the files on hosting you pay for, doesn't change when the tool's rules do.
Connecting a domain to ChatGPT Sites or Canva instead
ChatGPT Sites and builders such as Canva let you connect a domain you already own by adding DNS records they give you. That is sensible if you want to keep editing by chat and don't mind paying for the plan. The trade-off: the site stays on their servers, under their limits, and ChatGPT's docs describe no way to export a Site created on the web. Either way, you need your own domain first.
What you need to host a website made with Claude or ChatGPT
- A domain name, such as yourbusiness.in, renewed every year. For customers in India, .in is a natural fit; see .com vs .in if you're torn.
- Web hosting: a server that hands your files to visitors.
- An SSL certificate, so the site loads on
https://with a padlock. HostEthical includes one free.
| Extension | First year | Renewal (per year) | Transfer in |
|---|---|---|---|
| .in | ₹1,003 | ₹1,003 | ₹1,003 |
| .com | ₹1,622 | ₹1,651 | ₹1,522 |
| .co.in | ₹816 | ₹816 | ₹816 |
HostEthical's Lite hosting plan starts at ₹99 a month, or about ₹82.50 a month when billed yearly, and renews at the same price. Its 1 website, 5 GB of NVMe storage and 50 GB of monthly bandwidth are far more than a one-page site needs; the Business plan holds 3 sites. Hosting doesn't include a free domain or email mailboxes, so register the domain separately: how to buy a domain name walks you through it, and what a website costs in India covers the wider budget.
Can it be free? For a personal portfolio, GitHub Pages can serve static files on your own domain at no cost, but GitHub's limits page says Pages is not to be used as free hosting for an online business or e-commerce site.
Step 1: Get the files out of Claude, ChatGPT or Google AI Studio
None of these tools has a "send to my hosting" button. The goal is a folder on your computer containing index.html and everything it uses.
From Claude
For an artifact made in a chat before 16 September 2026, use the controls at the top of the panel to view, copy or download the code. Artifacts made from a template have an Export button; a Design exports as a .zip or standalone HTML, says Anthropic's artifacts guide. Otherwise, ask Claude for the complete code in the chat, paste it into a plain text editor such as Notepad or VS Code (not Word) and save it as index.html. Sites built with Claude Code are already in a folder on your computer.
From ChatGPT
Ask for "the complete, final code as a single index.html file, with the CSS and JavaScript inside it". Copy it from the reply or canvas, or use the download option, and save it as index.html. For several pages, ask for each file by name and the folder layout, so the links match.
From Google AI Studio
Build mode exports your app as a ZIP or syncs it to GitHub, as Google's Build mode docs explain. Apps that call Gemini now include a server part that keeps your API key off the page, so they need a server to run. If your page only shows information, ask AI Studio for it as plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
VITE_ variables end up in browser code and should not contain sensitive information such as API keys. Keys built to be public, like a Supabase publishable key, are the exception.Step 2: Upload them to your hosting with File Manager or SFTP
Each website on HostEthical hosting has its own web folder, sites/yourdomain/public_html. Whatever is in it is what visitors see, and index.html is the home page.
With File Manager (easiest for a few files)
- Add your domain as a website in the hosting dashboard.
- Open File Manager and go into that site's
public_htmlfolder. - Delete the placeholder
index.htmlalready there, or let your file replace it. - Upload your
index.htmland any folders it uses, keeping the same structure as on your computer.
With SFTP (better for many files)
For dozens of files, an SFTP app such as FileZilla is quicker. Create an SFTP login in the dashboard, connect with the host and port shown there, open public_html and drag across the contents of your local folder. Upload the contents, not the folder: public_html/index.html loads at your domain, public_html/my-site/index.html doesn't. Extract any .zip on your computer first.
Step 3: Point your domain and get free SSL
- Nameservers. Set the domain's nameservers to
ns1.hostethical.comandns2.hostethical.com. Simplest for a new domain with no email on it. - A records. Keep DNS where it is and add A records for
@andwwwpointing to the server IP shown in your dashboard. Use this if email already runs on the domain.
DNS changes often work within an hour but can take 24 to 48 hours to reach everyone. Our guide to connecting a domain to hosting has the checks.
SSL turns on automatically once your domain points to us. The free Let's Encrypt certificate can only be issued after the domain resolves to the server, so the dashboard shows "Waiting for DNS" until then; if it is still waiting after DNS has updated, click "Try again". Once it is issued, visitors are sent to the secure address by default (the site's Force HTTPS setting). What an SSL certificate does explains why it matters.
If your AI made a React, Next.js, Lovable or Bolt app instead
App builders usually produce a project that must be built before a browser can use it; a package.json file gives it away. Build on your own computer (with Node.js installed) and upload only the output.
Vite projects: older Lovable apps and Bolt exports
Bolt downloads a project through Export, then Download (Bolt's help). Lovable syncs to GitHub on every plan and offers a .zip on paid plans; its projects created before 13 May 2026 use React and Vite. For a Vite project, run:
npm install
npm run build
Vite puts the finished site in a dist folder (Vite docs); upload what is inside it.
One catch: these apps switch pages inside the browser, so Lovable's hosting guide says the server must return index.html for every route, or a visitor who refreshes on /about gets a 404. You can't edit web server settings on shared hosting, so check with support first, or ask the AI to use hash links such as /#/about, which work anywhere.
Next.js
A Next.js site without server features can be exported as plain files. Add output: 'export' and trailingSlash: true to the project's Next.js config file (next.config.js, .mjs or .ts, whichever it has), run npm run build and upload the contents of out. The trailing-slash setting saves each page as a folder with its own index.html, which any server can serve. The Next.js static export guide lists what an export can't do, including server actions, cookies and redirects.
Apps that need a server
Some apps can't become plain files: Lovable projects created since 13 May 2026, which use TanStack Start and render pages on the server; AI Studio apps that call Gemini; and anything with Express, logins or its own database. Lovable's guide says these need a host that runs the server part, so shared hosting is the wrong place. A VPS with full root access, from ₹860 a month, or about ₹774.17 a month when billed yearly, can run them, or you can leave them on the platform that built them and connect your domain there. VPS vs shared hosting helps you decide.
Use it as your Google Business Profile website
Google turned off the free websites it made from Business Profiles in March 2024, as Search Engine Journal reported. An AI-made one-pager on your own domain is a quick replacement. Ask the AI to include:
- your business name, address and phone number exactly as on your profile;
- opening hours, services and prices;
- a tap-to-call link, a WhatsApp chat link and an embedded map;
- a few real photos of your shop, team or work.
Once it loads on https://, add it in your profile's website field. Google's Business Profile help asks for the full URL, including https://, and says Googlebot must not be blocked from your site.
Editing with AI later without breaking the live site
- Keep the master copy on your computer, not in a chat. Give the AI the current file each time; working from an older draft, it will quietly undo your last changes.
- Test before you upload. Open
index.htmlin your browser and check it on your phone. Keep the previous version until the new one works. - Lean on the safety nets. HostEthical takes nightly backups, keeps the last 7 and restores in one click, and you can take your own backup before a big change. For larger edits, copy the site to a staging address, check it, then publish it back; a backup is taken automatically first.
- Use Git if you can. Every AI change becomes a reviewable diff, and push-to-deploy puts it live. Our guide to editing your live website with Claude Code covers SSH, Git and staging.
Common problems: blank page, broken images, 404s and forms that don't send
A blank white page
Usually you uploaded the project's source instead of the built site. If index.html loads something like /src/main.jsx, run the build and upload dist or out. In Chrome, press F12 and open the Console; red errors about missing files point at the cause.
Broken images
The AI may have used links that only worked in its preview, or paths from your computer such as C:\Users\.... Put images in an images folder and use relative paths like images/shop.jpg. File names on the server are case-sensitive: Logo.PNG and logo.png are different files.
404 Not Found or "Not secure"
For a 404, check the home page is named exactly index.html (Windows hides extensions, so it may really be index.html.txt) and sits directly in public_html. If only inner pages fail on refresh, see the routing note above. A "Not secure" warning means SSL isn't issued yet because DNS is still updating, or the page loads images or scripts over http://; change those links to https://.
Forms that don't send
AI-made contact forms often look finished but send nothing, because something on a server has to receive the message. HostEthical hosting also can't send email from the server, so a PHP mail() script won't work, and outgoing SMTP ports are blocked. What works:
- A form service such as Formspree, which emails you each entry; as of October 2026 its free plan, which Formspree describes as for testing, allows 50 submissions a month.
- An embedded Google Form, or a WhatsApp chat button, which many Indian customers prefer anyway.
- A small PHP handler that sends through an email service's HTTPS API, with the key kept on the server. Our guide to fixing email with an API shows how.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my own domain with a Claude artifact or ChatGPT share link?
Not with a Claude artifact: Anthropic's sharing guide describes no way to attach your own domain, and anyone opening an artifact made after 16 September 2026 needs a Claude account. ChatGPT Sites, in public beta on the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, can connect a domain you already own where custom domains are available. For full control, download the files, upload them to your own hosting and point your domain there.
Is it free to host a website made with ChatGPT?
Sharing a draft link costs nothing beyond your AI plan, but a business site on your own domain needs a yearly domain fee plus hosting. GitHub Pages is free for personal static sites, but GitHub's rules say it is not to be used as free hosting for an online business or e-commerce site. HostEthical's Lite plan holds one website and renews at the same price.
Do I need to know coding to put an AI-made website online?
Not for a single HTML file: save the code as index.html, upload it with File Manager and point your domain at the hosting. Projects with a package.json file need a build step on your computer with Node.js installed. Apps that need their own server, such as Lovable projects created since 13 May 2026, need a VPS or can stay on the platform that built them, with your domain connected there.
Why doesn't my contact form send emails after I upload the site?
A form needs something on a server to receive the message, and HostEthical hosting cannot send email from the server, so PHP mail() scripts and SMTP settings won't work. Use a form service such as Formspree, a WhatsApp chat button, or a small PHP handler that sends through an email service's HTTPS API.
