How to Host a Website in India: Step-by-Step Guide

How to host a website in India in six steps: register a domain, buy hosting, set the nameservers, turn on free SSL, install WordPress and go live the same day.

To host a website in India, you need two things: a domain name and a web hosting plan. Register the domain, buy hosting, point the domain to your host's nameservers, switch on SSL, then install WordPress or upload your files, and your site is live. Most people finish the whole process in an afternoon, with a short wait while the domain connects.

What you need before you start

You don't need to be technical, and you don't need a developer for a simple site. Keep these ready:

ItemWhat it isDo you need it?
Domain nameYour address, such as yourbusiness.inYes
Web hostingServer space where your site's files liveYes
SSL certificateTurns on HTTPS and the browser padlockYes (free with good hosts)
Website contentYour logo, photos, service list, prices, contact detailsYes
A website builder or CMSWordPress, or a site your designer builtUsually
Business email addressAn address on your own domainOptional, but looks professional

Write your content before you start. A list of your services, a short "about us", your address, WhatsApp number and a few good photos will get you further than any template. If you are still working out what web hosting actually is, read what is web hosting first.

Step 1: Choose and register a domain name

Your domain is how customers find you, so spend ten minutes on it. Keep it short, easy to spell when said aloud over the phone, and free of hyphens and numbers. If your business serves customers in India, a .in domain signals that clearly and often has better availability than .com. Many businesses register both to protect their name. Our guide on how to choose a domain name goes deeper.

Here are current prices for the extensions most Indian businesses pick:

ExtensionFirst yearRenewal (per year)Transfer in
.in ₹1,003 ₹1,003 ₹1,003
.com ₹1,622 ₹1,651 ₹1,522
.co.in ₹816 ₹816 ₹816

When you register, use your own name and your own email address as the owner, even if a designer is helping you. Turn on WHOIS privacy so your phone number and address aren't published; HostEthical includes it free wherever the registry allows. Search for your domain here.

Already own a domain elsewhere? You don't need to move it. You can keep it at your current registrar and simply change its nameservers in Step 3. If you would rather manage everything in one place, you can transfer it to HostEthical with the EPP/auth code from your current registrar.

Step 2: Choose a hosting plan

For almost every first website (a business site, portfolio, blog or small store), shared web hosting is the right choice. It is affordable, the server is managed for you, and you can upgrade later. A VPS only makes sense if you need root access, custom software or consistently heavy traffic.

Pick the plan by counting the websites you will run and estimating how busy they'll be:

Plan WebsitesStorageDatabasesBandwidth Monthly Yearly
Lite 15 GB NVMe150 GB / month ₹99 ₹990
Starter 110 GB NVMe2100 GB / month ₹199 ₹1,990
Business 330 GB NVMe10300 GB / month ₹399 ₹3,990
Pro 550 GB NVMe301 TB / month ₹699 ₹6,990
  • Starter (1 website, 10 GB NVMe, 2 databases, 100 GB bandwidth a month, 1 PHP worker) suits a single business site or blog.
  • Business (3 websites, 30 GB NVMe, 10 databases, 300 GB a month, 2 PHP workers) suits a growing store or someone running a couple of sites.
  • Pro (5 websites, 50 GB NVMe, 30 databases, 1 TB a month, 4 PHP workers) suits freelancers and busier sites.

Before you pay anywhere, check the renewal price, not just the first-term price. Many hosts advertise a low rate that rises sharply at renewal; HostEthical charges the same every year. Our 10-point checklist for choosing web hosting covers everything else worth comparing.

Step 3: Connect your domain to your hosting

Your domain now needs to know where your website lives. There are two ways to connect it.

Option A: Change the nameservers (easiest)

In your domain's settings, replace the existing nameservers with:

  • ns1.hostethical.com
  • ns2.hostethical.com

This hands DNS for the domain to your host, so the records that send visitors to your website are managed in the same place as your hosting. If your domain is registered with HostEthical, you do this from your dashboard. If it is with another registrar, log in there, find "Nameservers" or "DNS management", choose custom nameservers and paste the two values.

Option B: Add DNS records

If you want to keep DNS where it is (for example, because your email records are already set up there), add an A record pointing your domain to your hosting server's IP address, and a CNAME or second A record for the www version.

After the change, allow time for it to spread across the internet. It often works within an hour or two, but can take up to 24 to 48 hours in some places. For screenshots and troubleshooting, see how to connect a domain to hosting.

Step 4: Turn on SSL (HTTPS)

SSL encrypts the connection between your visitor and your site and shows the padlock in the address bar. Without it, Chrome and other browsers label your site "Not secure", which puts off customers before they read a word. Google also uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and you need it for contact forms, logins and payments.

Every HostEthical hosting plan includes free SSL on every site. The certificate can only be issued once your domain points to the hosting server, so if SSL isn't active yet, check that Step 3 has finished spreading and try again. Once it is active, make sure the site always loads on https://; in WordPress, set both address fields under Settings > General to the https version.

Step 5: Build or upload your website

Now put something on the server. Pick the route that matches how your site is being made.

Option A: Install WordPress in one click

WordPress powers a very large share of the web and is the easiest way for a small business to build a site it can edit itself. From your hosting dashboard, use the one-click WordPress installer, choose your domain, set an admin username (not "admin") and a strong password, and it is ready in a minute or two. Then:

  1. Choose a lightweight theme and add your logo and colours.
  2. Create the core pages: Home, About, Services or Products, and Contact.
  3. Add a contact form and a click-to-WhatsApp link, which many Indian customers prefer to email.
  4. Install only the plugins you need. Every extra plugin is something to update and a possible slowdown.

Option B: Upload a ready-made site

If a designer has given you a finished site as HTML files, upload them with the File Manager in your dashboard or with an SFTP app such as FileZilla. Put the files in your site's web folder and make sure the home page is named index.html or index.php.

Option C: A PHP app with a database

For a custom PHP site or an app built on a framework, upload the files by SFTP, create a database from your dashboard, then import your .sql file through phpMyAdmin. Update the app's config with the new database name, user and password. HostEthical runs PHP 8.3, so check that your code supports it.

Step 6: Test everything and go live

Before you share the link, run through this checklist:

  • Open the site on your phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. Most of your visitors will arrive this way.
  • Check that both yourbusiness.in and www.yourbusiness.in load and show the padlock.
  • Submit your own contact form and confirm the message arrives.
  • Tap every phone number and WhatsApp link to check they open correctly.
  • Check that your address, opening hours and prices are correct.
  • Add your site to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap so Google can find your pages.
  • Add your website link to your Google Business Profile, Instagram bio and WhatsApp Business profile.

HostEthical takes nightly backups and keeps the last 7, so you can roll back if an update goes wrong. It is still wise to download your own copy after big changes.

How much does it cost to host a website in India?

For a do-it-yourself business site, your only essential costs are the domain and the hosting. A .in domain costs ₹1,003 for the first year and the same to renew , and HostEthical hosting starts at ₹99 a month, or about ₹82.50 a month when billed yearly . Billing yearly costs less per month than paying monthly, and the hosting price stays the same when you renew. Prices are shown without GST added.

Everything else is optional: a premium theme, paid plugins, a logo, professional photos or a designer's time. Our guide to how much a website costs in India breaks down typical budgets, from a DIY site to an agency build.

Can you host a website for free?

Free hosting exists, but it usually comes with a subdomain instead of your own domain, ads on your pages, tight limits and little or no support. That is fine for learning, but a business website on a free subdomain looks temporary to customers, and you can lose it if the service closes. Paid hosting at a few hundred rupees a month is one of the cheapest ways to look established.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Letting someone else own your domain. If your designer registers it under their account, you depend on them forever. Insist it is in your name.
  • Choosing hosting on the intro price alone. Work out what you will pay in year two and three. Our guide to hosting renewal prices shows how.
  • Forgetting renewals. An expired domain takes your website and email down. Turn on auto-renew and keep your billing email up to date.
  • Skipping SSL. A "Not secure" warning costs you enquiries.
  • Installing too many plugins. Slow sites lose visitors, especially on mobile data.
  • Hosting on a home computer. Home broadband rarely has a fixed public IP, and power cuts take the site down.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know coding to host a website?

No. With a one-click WordPress install you can set up a site, choose a theme and edit pages in a visual editor without writing code. Coding is only needed for custom features.

Why is my website not showing after I changed the nameservers?

DNS changes take time to spread, often an hour or two and occasionally up to 48 hours. Try mobile data or a private browser window, and check the nameservers were entered exactly as given.

Can I host more than one website on one hosting plan?

Yes, if the plan allows multiple websites. At HostEthical, Starter hosts 1 website, Business hosts 3 and Pro hosts 5, each on its own domain.

How long does it take for a new website to appear on Google?

Anything from a few days to a few weeks. Submitting your sitemap in Google Search Console and linking to the site from your Google Business Profile and social profiles helps Google find it sooner.
