About .in domains
.in is India's country-code domain, managed by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It tells visitors and search engines at a glance that your website is meant for India. For a local shop, a clinic, a coaching institute or a D2C brand selling within the country, that signal builds trust before anyone reads a word on your page.
Far fewer names are registered under .in than under .com, so short and meaningful names are still easier to find. Google uses country-code domains such as .in as a hint that a site targets that country, which helps when your audience is here. NIXI now asks every registrant to complete identity verification, so register with your real name, a working email address and phone number, and keep an ID such as Aadhaar, PAN or a passport handy.
Good to know
- Managed by NIXI, the official .in registry under India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
- Open to Indian and foreign registrants. NIXI requires identity verification (eKYC), and registrants outside India are also asked to state their business connection or purpose in India.
- NIXI does not permit privacy or proxy services, so registrant details must be accurate. Disposable email addresses are not accepted.
- The registry can suspend domains that fail verification, so complete eKYC promptly after registering or renewing.
- Transferring a .in to HostEthical works with the EPP/auth code from your current registrar.

Yes. Google treats country-code domains like .in as a signal that a site targets India, which helps when your customers are here. Rankings still depend mainly on content quality, speed and links.
Choose .in if your customers are mostly in India and you want a short, local name. Choose .com if you sell worldwide. Registering both protects your brand and lets you redirect one to the other.
No. The .in registry does not allow privacy or proxy services, so you must register with accurate details that match your identity verification.
