What Is an RDP Server? Meaning, Uses and How to Buy One
RDP server meaning, simply: Remote Desktop Protocol on port 3389, Windows VPS vs RDP, admin vs shared RDP, and what to check before you buy RDP in India.
An RDP server is a Windows computer you use over the internet with Remote Desktop: you see its desktop on your own screen, and your keyboard and mouse control it. RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol, Microsoft's system for this, and it listens on port 3389 by default. When people "buy RDP", they are almost always renting a Windows VPS: a virtual Windows server in a data centre that stays on day and night, which they connect to by RDP.
The short version:
- RDP full form: Remote Desktop Protocol. "RDP server" just means the Windows machine you connect to.
- Windows VPS vs RDP: the VPS is the server; RDP is how you reach it. Most sellers use the two words for the same product.
- Admin RDP gives you the whole server and the Administrator account. Shared RDP gives you one user account on a server shared with other people.
- Before you buy, check that Windows is properly licensed, what CPU and RAM you actually get, where the server is, and that the seller's rules match what you plan to do.
What RDP means
RDP is the protocol Windows uses to send a computer's screen to another device and send your keyboard and mouse back. It is built into every Windows PC and Windows Server. Microsoft's own documentation says Remote Desktop listens on port 3389 by default, which is why that port appears in firewall settings and in many "RDP port number" searches.
On your side you need a Remote Desktop app. Windows has Remote Desktop Connection built in (you start it with mstsc), and on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or Android phone you use Microsoft's free Windows App, which replaced the older Microsoft Remote Desktop app. Our guide on how to connect to an RDP server walks through each device.
RDP kya hota hai? RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) se aap internet par kisi doosre Windows computer ki screen apne phone ya laptop par dekh aur chala sakte hain. "RDP server" woh Windows machine hai jise aap connect karte hain, aur aam taur par woh data centre mein chalne wala ek Windows VPS hota hai jo 24 ghante on rehta hai.
RDP server vs Windows VPS vs shared RDP
The same product is sold under several names. This table sorts them out:
| Name you'll see | What you actually get | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Windows VPS | A whole virtual Windows server with its own CPU, RAM, disk and IP address | Running your own software all day, full control |
| Admin RDP | The same thing, sold with the Administrator login | Installing any program, changing settings |
| Shared RDP | One user account on a Windows server used by many customers | Light browsing at the lowest price; no software that needs admin rights |
| Linux VPS | A server without a Windows desktop, managed over SSH | Websites, Python bots, Docker; see what a VPS is |
Shared RDP is cheaper because many people split one server, but you share its CPU and memory with strangers and can't install system-wide software. If the program you need must run all the time, or needs an installer, choose admin RDP on your own Windows VPS.
What people use an RDP server for
- Trading terminals that must stay open, such as MetaTrader 4 or 5 or a broker's Windows terminal, so alerts and expert advisers keep running when your laptop is off.
- Windows-only software you need away from your own PC, from accounting tools to old line-of-business programs.
- Long jobs and automation: browser automation, scheduled reports, downloads or tests that take hours.
- A clean, separate machine for work you don't want on your personal computer.
- Working from your phone: open a full Windows desktop on Android or iPhone when you're away from your desk.
If your goal is a static IP for broker API trading from Python code, you don't need Windows at all; a Linux server in Mumbai is cheaper and closer to the exchanges.
What to check before you buy RDP
1. Is Windows properly licensed?
Windows Server needs a licence, and the seller should include it in the price. Microsoft offers Windows Server as a 180-day evaluation, and some very cheap RDP is set up on an evaluation copy: it works at first, then starts shutting down when the trial ends. Ask the seller directly whether the licence is included and whether the server is activated. Once you're connected, Settings, System, Activation shows the answer.
2. How many people can use it?
Windows Server allows two simultaneous Remote Desktop connections for administration without extra licences. That covers one person signed in from two devices. For more separate users, Microsoft requires a Remote Desktop Services client access licence (RDS CAL) for each user or device, so a "multi-user RDP" offer should say how that is licensed.
3. What resources do you really get?
Windows Server itself uses a good part of a small machine. For a smooth desktop with a browser and one or two programs open, look for at least 2 CPU cores and 4 GB of RAM; heavier software, several browser windows or a trading terminal with many charts are happier with 4 cores and 8 GB. Check the disk too: Windows updates alone take several gigabytes.
4. Where is the server?
The farther the server is from you, the more delay you feel when you click and type. A server in Europe or the USA is fine for running software all day and for normal desktop work from India; for the snappiest feel, or if your software talks to Indian exchanges, a server in India is better. "Indian RDP" in an advert should mean the server is in India, not just that you pay in rupees.
5. Price and what's included
When we searched Google India in October 2026, RDP sellers' listings started at roughly ₹390 to ₹1,250 a month for entry-level plans, usually with less RAM, shared servers or no mention of licensing. A properly licensed Windows VPS with 8 GB RAM costs more, because the Windows licence alone is a real monthly cost for the provider. Compare what you get, not just the headline price: RAM, CPU cores, admin access, licence, location and whether the price stays the same at renewal.
6. The rules
Every honest provider bans spam, attacking or scanning other servers, and fraud, and stops servers used for them. Offers that advertise "port 25 open for bulk mail" or anonymous use are a warning sign: those servers are often shut down mid-month, and they put the provider's network at risk.
Keeping your RDP server safe
Port 3389 is scanned constantly by bots trying common passwords, so:
- Use a long, unique Administrator password, and change the one you were given at setup.
- If your own IP address doesn't change often, allow port 3389 only from it in the server's firewall.
- Keep Windows Update switched on, and restart when it asks.
- Take a snapshot before installing new software, so you can roll back if something breaks.
When you're done for the day, disconnect rather than sign out if you want your programs to keep running: closing the Remote Desktop window leaves your session and apps open on the server.

Frequently asked questions
What is an RDP server?
An RDP server is a Windows computer you use over the internet with Remote Desktop: its desktop appears on your screen and your keyboard and mouse control it. RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol, which Microsoft builds into Windows. When people buy RDP they usually rent a Windows VPS, a virtual Windows server in a data centre that stays on 24/7, so programs keep running when their own PC is off.
What is the difference between a VPS and RDP?
A VPS is the server itself: a virtual machine with its own CPU, RAM, disk and IP address. RDP is the way you connect to a Windows server and see its desktop. So a Windows VPS is something you reach by RDP, and most sellers use both names for the same product. A Linux VPS usually has no desktop and is managed over SSH instead.
What port does RDP use?
Remote Desktop listens on TCP port 3389 by default, according to Microsoft's documentation. The server's firewall must allow that port for you to connect. Because bots scan the internet for open port 3389, use a long, unique password and, if your own IP address rarely changes, allow port 3389 only from that address.
What is admin RDP and shared RDP?
Admin RDP gives you a whole Windows server and the Administrator account, so you can install any program and change any setting. Shared RDP gives you an ordinary user account on a server that many customers share, which is cheaper but slower and cannot install system-wide software. For trading terminals, bots or anything that must run all day, admin RDP is the safer choice.
How much does an RDP server cost in India?
When we searched Google India in October 2026, entry-level RDP was listed from roughly ₹390 to ₹1,250 a month, often with little RAM, shared servers or no word on licensing. A Windows VPS with a genuine Windows Server licence, 4 cores and 8 GB RAM costs more because the licence is a monthly cost. HostEthical's Windows RDP plan includes Windows Server 2025, 4 cores, 8 GB RAM and 100 GB SSD.
