Website vs Instagram for a Small Business: Do You Need Both?
Website vs Instagram for a small business in India: what Instagram, WhatsApp and Google Business Profile do free, their limits and when a site pays off.
For most Indian small businesses, the honest answer to website vs Instagram is that you will want both, but not necessarily on day one. Instagram, WhatsApp Business and a Google Business Profile are free and bring in most first customers. A small website becomes worth its few thousand rupees a year once you want to be found in Google search beyond the map, take payments through a gateway such as Razorpay, or sell to buyers who check you out before they order. It is also the only one of the four that you control.
Google’s free business.site websites were switched off in 2024, so there is no free fallback there. Below: what each free tool does well, where it falls short, and what the smallest useful website costs.
Website vs Instagram vs Google Business Profile: the comparison
How the four compare for a shop, café, salon, tutor or home business, as of October 2026:
| WhatsApp Business | Google Business Profile | Your own website | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free app | Free | Domain and hosting every year; Google Sites is free on a sites.google.com address |
| Ownership | Runs on Meta’s terms; the account can be disabled | Runs on Meta’s terms | Runs on Google’s guidelines; profiles can be suspended | Yours for as long as you renew the domain and hosting |
| Reach | Ranking decides who sees each post; Reels can reach non-followers | People who already have your number or link | People searching Google Search and Maps near you | People who search or tap a link to it; nothing pushes it out |
| Search visibility | Mostly inside Instagram | Mostly inside WhatsApp | Strong for local and “near me” searches | Each page can match a specific search |
| Effort | High: regular posts and Reels | Medium: quick replies to chats | Low: hours, photos, replies to reviews | Set up once, then update prices and photos |
| Gateway checkout on your own pages | No | No; the cart sends the order as a message | No | Yes, once a gateway approves the site |
None of these replaces the others; the website is the place the other three point to.
What Instagram, WhatsApp Business and Google Business Profile do well for free
Instagram is a shop window that moves: Reels show your work, and people can message you from the same screen. It can reach new people too: Instagram’s ranking explainer says most of what people see in Explore and Reels comes from accounts they don’t follow. Your profile can carry up to five links, according to Instagram’s Help Centre as of October 2026, so the old “one link in bio” limit no longer applies.
WhatsApp Business
The WhatsApp Business app is free to download and adds a business profile with your address, email and website, plus greeting and away messages, quick replies and labels. Its catalogue lists products or services with up to 10 photos or videos each, a price, a description and a website link; customers can put items in a cart and send it as one message. WhatsApp’s features page lists free ways in: QR codes, short links and WhatsApp buttons on your Instagram profile and Facebook Page.
Google Business Profile
The Business Profile is free and is what appears when someone searches “tailor near me” or your shop’s name on Google Search and Maps: hours, phone number, photos, reviews, posts and services. If you don’t meet customers at your address, as with many home bakers and home tutors, Google lets you hide it and show a service area instead. For walk-in businesses it is usually the most useful free listing of all.
Website vs social media for business: the real limits
- You don’t control the account. Instagram’s Terms of Use allow Meta to remove content or stop providing the service to you, including disabling your account, if it believes you broke its terms or policies; Facebook’s terms are similar, which also answers “website vs Facebook for business”. After a mistaken ban, Instagram says you may be able to ask for a review (disabled accounts); a deleted account cannot be restored. Either way, the followers and chat history go with the account.
- Hacked accounts take time to recover. Instagram’s recovery steps run through login links, a support request and, for accounts with photos of you, a video selfie to confirm who you are. Meanwhile, customers who message the account reach whoever controls it. Meta Verified, a paid subscription, gives businesses priority email and chat support.
- Reach depends on the ranking system. Instagram says Feed mixes posts from accounts you follow with recommendations and ads, ordered by how likely each person is to interact with them. Not every follower sees every post.
- Posts are hard to search. A customer who wants your bridal blouse rate has to scroll or message you; a web page answers it, and Google can match it to the search.
- The catalogue is not a checkout. WhatsApp reviews every catalogue item before customers can see it, and the cart arrives as a chat message, so the rest of the sale still happens in the conversation.
Google Business Profile vs website: what happened to free Google websites
Until 2024, Google let you build a basic site from your Business Profile at an address ending in business.site. According to Google’s help article on the change (since removed; archived copy from May 2024), these sites stopped working on 5 March 2024, visitors were redirected to the Business Profile until 10 June 2024, and after that they got a “Page not found” error. Google removed business.site addresses from profiles and suggested other builders, among them Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Google Sites, Shopify and WordPress.
So you can no longer make a free website inside Google Business Profile. Its Website field takes a site you build elsewhere, and Google’s current help asks only for the full URL and that Googlebot isn’t blocked. Two details matter:
- Don’t use Instagram as your “website”. Google’s profile guidelines ask for a website that represents your business location and say not to give URLs that send people to other landing pages, “including pages created on social media sites”. Instagram and Facebook belong in the separate social profiles field, which Google says is available in select regions.
- Links count towards prominence. Google says local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. A website gives directories, suppliers and local news sites something to link to.
Do I need a website for my small business? When it starts paying for itself
If every customer walks in or comes by word of mouth, the free tools may be enough for now. A website earns its keep when:
- People search for the service, not your name. The Business Profile covers “near me” searches on Maps. A website adds pages Google can match to longer searches, such as “maths tuition for class 10 CBSE in Kothrud” or “eggless cake delivery in Whitefield”, which a short profile description can’t cover.
- You run ads. Meta’s ads that click to WhatsApp open a chat straight from Facebook or Instagram, so you can advertise without a site. Google Ads usually sends each click to a landing page that must meet its destination requirements (working, useful, easy to navigate), and a page on your own site is the simplest way to have one.
- You want to take payments online. UPI to your number is fine for small orders, but a payment gateway for cards, UPI and netbanking checks your website. Razorpay’s documentation says that without live website or app details you can’t get live API keys, although you can still collect money through Invoices and Payment Links from its dashboard. Our guide to payment gateway website requirements lists the pages Razorpay asks for.
- You sell to other businesses. An office ordering lunch boxes or a school buying uniforms will usually look you up before paying an advance. A website with your legal name, address and an email on your own domain answers their questions.
- You want email that matches your name. orders@yourbakery.in looks more established on an invoice than a Gmail address, and it needs a domain. See how to create a business email on your own domain. HostEthical web hosting includes free mailboxes of 1 GB each (one on the Lite and Starter plans).
The minimum website a small shop needs: five pages
A small business site doesn’t need a blog or twenty pages. Five cover what customers, Google and payment gateways look for:
| Page | What goes on it |
|---|---|
| Home | One line on what you sell and where, opening hours, your best photos, and buttons to WhatsApp and call you |
| Products or services, with prices | Your menu, rate card, course fees or price ranges in rupees. “DM for price” helps neither a customer nor a gateway reviewer |
| About | Who runs the business and since when, your registered or legal name, photos of the shop, kitchen or workshop |
| Contact | Address with a map, phone, WhatsApp chat link, email, hours and the areas you deliver to |
| Policies | Terms, privacy policy, refunds and cancellations, plus shipping if you send orders. For a gateway, give each policy its own page linked from the footer |
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on the site, the Business Profile, WhatsApp and Instagram, and write the text the way you would explain things at the counter.
Website for small business in India: what it costs per year
The yearly running costs are a domain and hosting. HostEthical’s domain prices today:
| Extension | First year | Renewal (per year) | Transfer in |
|---|---|---|---|
| .in | ₹1,003 | ₹1,003 | ₹1,003 |
| .com | ₹1,622 | ₹1,651 | ₹1,522 |
| .co.in | ₹816 | ₹816 | ₹816 |
Registering a .in or .co.in domain now involves an identity check (.in domain eKYC), and our tips on how to choose a domain name help you pick one that matches your Instagram handle. HostEthical hosting starts at ₹99 a month, or about ₹82.50 a month when billed yearly, the same at renewal, with free SSL, nightly backups and one-click WordPress.
The build is where costs differ:
- Google Sites: free to build; you pay only if you connect your own domain. Covered in the next section.
- Do it yourself with WordPress: a free theme and a couple of weekends. Our website cost guide puts a DIY business site at about ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 in the first year, as a typical market range.
- Build it with AI: Claude, ChatGPT or Google AI Studio can write a simple five-page site from your description, and you upload the files to hosting. See how to host a website made with AI.
- Hire a freelancer: roughly ₹10,000 to ₹40,000 for a business site in the same guide’s ranges. Keep the domain, hosting and admin login in your own name.
Our guide on how to host a website covers connecting the domain and SSL.
How to make a free website for your business on Google
Google Sites is the nearest thing to a 100% free website: you build it with your Google account and publish it on a sites.google.com address. The steps, from Google’s Sites help:
- On a computer, open Google Sites and pick a template under “Start a new site”.
- Add your pages (home, services and prices, contact) with your own text and photos.
- Click Publish, choose the web address and publish, then add it to your Business Profile and Instagram.
The trade-offs, as of October 2026: Google says you must use a computer to edit a site, and the free address is long. You can connect your own domain: it has to use a subdomain such as www, you prove ownership with a TXT record in Google Search Console, and up to five domains can point at one site. It suits a simple information site; for a cart and a payment gateway, WordPress with WooCommerce on hosting or a store builder fits better. HostEthical doesn’t offer a drag-and-drop builder, so if that is what you want, Google Sites is a sensible free start, and with your own domain you can move to hosting later without changing address.
How to make Instagram, WhatsApp and your website work together
- Instagram: put your website first among your five profile links, and when a post is about one product, point to that product’s page rather than the home page. Add the WhatsApp button to your profile as well.
- Google Business Profile: your own site in the Website field, Instagram and Facebook under social profiles, and your WhatsApp link in the Chat field. Google’s chat help says verified profiles can add a WhatsApp click-to-chat link or a texting number, in select regions.
- WhatsApp Business: add the website to your business profile and, for each catalogue item, a link to the matching page on your site.
- Your website: a “Chat on WhatsApp” button on every page. WhatsApp’s click to chat format is
https://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX: the full number in international format, without a plus sign, zeroes, brackets or dashes. Add?text=and a URL-encoded message to pre-fill the chat, for examplehttps://wa.me/91XXXXXXXXXX?text=Hi%2C%20I%20saw%20your%20website. Link your Instagram from the footer.
Instagram and WhatsApp keep regulars talking to you, the Business Profile catches local searches, and all of them point to a website that answers routine questions about prices and location.
If you are X, do Y: a quick decision guide
- A home baker taking orders on Instagram: set up WhatsApp Business with a catalogue and a Business Profile with a service area and your address hidden. Register your domain now; a Google Sites page on it is enough until you want online payments.
- A tutor or coaching class: the Business Profile comes first, because parents search by area. Add a simple site with courses, fees and timings; Google Sites or WordPress both work.
- A salon or café with walk-in customers: put most effort into the Business Profile (hours, photos, review replies), plus a website with the menu or rate card and a WhatsApp link.
- A tailor or boutique shipping across India: build a website with prices and policy pages before you apply for a gateway, and use Razorpay Payment Links while it is being built.
- A supplier, caterer or manufacturer selling to businesses: get a website and email on your own domain early. Buyers check both.
- Running ads on a small budget: click-to-WhatsApp ads on Instagram need no site; most Google Search ads need a landing page, so build that first.
Whatever you choose, keep Instagram and WhatsApp going; the website gives them a permanent address to point to.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a free website in Google Business?
No, not any more. Google turned off websites made with Business Profiles on 5 March 2024, redirected visitors to the profile until 10 June 2024 and then showed a Page not found error. Your Business Profile is still free, and it has a Website field where you add a site built elsewhere, for example a free Google Sites site, WordPress on hosting or another website builder.
Can I create a website in Google for free?
Yes, with Google Sites. You build the site with your Google account on a computer, choose a template, add pages and publish it on a sites.google.com address. You can later connect your own domain, which you buy separately, by verifying it in Google Search Console. It suits a simple information site; for a cart and payment gateway, WordPress on hosting or a store builder fits better.
Is there a 100% free website builder?
Google Sites comes closest: you build and publish a site with a Google account on a sites.google.com address. The only cost appears if you want your own domain, which you buy from a registrar and renew every year. The trade-offs are a long address unless you connect that domain, editing only on a computer, and a tool aimed at simple information sites rather than online shops.
Do I need a website if I have Instagram and a Google Business Profile?
Not always at the start, but most growing businesses benefit from one. Instagram and the Business Profile are free and bring in local customers. A website becomes worth paying for when you want to appear for specific Google searches, run Google Search ads, get a payment gateway such as Razorpay approved, sell to other businesses or use email on your own domain. It is also the one channel you control.
