VPS Server in India: Why a Mumbai Location Makes Your Site Faster
Why a VPS server in India (Mumbai) loads faster for Indian users: latency explained, who benefits, data localisation, and when another region is better.
If most of your visitors, players or API clients are in India, a VPS server in India, specifically in Mumbai, will feel noticeably faster than one in Europe or the US, because every request travels a few hundred kilometres instead of several thousand. The gain is biggest for anything interactive: online stores, admin dashboards, mobile app backends, game servers and payment flows. If your audience is mostly outside India, or the server only runs background jobs, a cheaper region is usually the better deal.
Why server location matters: latency in plain English
Latency is the time it takes a packet to travel from a visitor's device to your server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms) and usually called ping or round-trip time. Data in fibre moves fast, but not instantly, and real internet routes are never a straight line. A request from Delhi to a server in Mumbai covers roughly 1,400 km. The same request to Germany covers well over 6,000 km of cable, plus every hop and exchange along the way.
Bandwidth and latency are different things. A 300 Mbit/s port tells you how much data can flow at once; latency tells you how long each conversation takes to start. A website can have huge bandwidth and still feel sluggish if every round trip takes 200 ms.
Typical round-trip times from India
The ranges below are rough, typical figures based on publicly reported ping data from Indian broadband connections. They are not HostEthical measurements, and your own numbers will depend on your ISP, whether you are on mobile data, and how traffic is routed on a given day.
| Server region | Typical round trip from major Indian cities | How it feels to Indian users |
|---|---|---|
| India (Mumbai) | Roughly 5–20 ms from Mumbai and Pune; often 20–50 ms from Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata | Snappy, close to "local" |
| Japan (Tokyo) | Often 100–170 ms | Usable, noticeably slower |
| Germany / United Kingdom | Often 110–180 ms | Usable for websites, laggy for games |
| Australia (Sydney) | Often 130–220 ms | Slow for interactive use |
| United States (Central or West) | Often 200–300 ms | Clearly slow for anything interactive |
Mobile networks add their own delay on top of these figures, often a few tens of milliseconds, so a visitor on 4G in a smaller city starts with a handicap you cannot control. The part you can control is the distance from the mobile tower to your server.
Why a few milliseconds turn into a slow page
One round trip does not sound like much, but a page load is a chain of them. Opening a fresh HTTPS connection typically needs about three round trips before the first byte of your page arrives: one for the TCP handshake, one for the TLS handshake (TLS 1.3), and one for the HTTP request itself. That gives a simple rule of thumb:
- At about 30 ms per round trip, connection setup costs roughly 90 ms.
- At about 150 ms, it costs roughly 450 ms.
- At about 250 ms, it costs roughly 750 ms, before your server has even started building the page.
Anything that cannot be cached, such as a logged-in dashboard, a cart, a search box or an API call, pays that distance again and again. Caching and a CDN help with images, CSS and JavaScript, but your HTML, checkout and API responses still come from the server itself. That is why time to first byte (TTFB) is usually the first metric to improve when a site moves closer to its users.
Who benefits most from a Mumbai VPS
A Mumbai VPS helps anyone whose users or partner systems are in India. Some workloads benefit far more than others.
| Workload | Why location matters | Benefit of Mumbai |
|---|---|---|
| Online stores and business websites for Indian buyers | Uncached pages (cart, checkout, account) are served straight from the server | High |
| WordPress or WooCommerce sites edited from India | Every click in the admin area is uncached, so editors feel every round trip | High |
| Mobile app backends and APIs | Apps often make several API calls in sequence before a screen loads | High |
| Game servers (Minecraft and similar) | Players feel ping directly; under about 50 ms is comfortable for most games | Very high |
| Payment and UPI integrations | Server-to-server calls to Indian payment gateways and their callbacks travel a shorter path | Medium to high |
| Real-time apps: chat, WebSockets, live dashboards | Each message is a round trip | High |
| Developer servers and SSH sessions | Typing in a remote terminal feels instant instead of laggy | Medium |
| Backups, cron jobs, CI runners, scrapers | Nobody is waiting on each request | Low |
Payment gateways, UPI and webhooks
If you sell online in India, your checkout probably talks to an Indian payment gateway. A typical flow has your server create an order through the gateway's API, the customer pay by UPI, card or netbanking, and the gateway then call your server back (a webhook) to confirm the payment. Your server may also call the gateway again to verify the status before marking the order paid.
Each of those server-to-server calls is a round trip. From a Mumbai VPS they are short. From a server in the US, every call crosses oceans twice, which slows down the "processing payment" screen your customer is staring at. Distance alone rarely causes a webhook to fail, because gateways usually allow a few seconds for a response, but a slow, far-away server leaves less headroom when your app is also busy. Keeping the server that handles payments close to the gateway is simply good engineering.
Game servers
For multiplayer games, latency is the product. Players in India connecting to a European server often see ping above 120 ms, which is enough to make combat feel delayed. A Mumbai server can bring most Indian players into a comfortable range. If you run a community server for players across India, Mumbai is usually the most central practical choice.
Data localisation: what to think about
Speed is not the only reason Indian businesses ask for an Indian server. Some also want, or are required, to keep certain data inside India. This is a general overview, not legal advice:
- General personal data. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 generally allows personal data to be processed outside India, except in countries the government specifically restricts. For many small businesses, the location of the server is therefore a choice rather than a legal requirement.
- Regulated sectors. Sector regulators can be stricter. Payment system data, for example, is subject to RBI storage rules for regulated payment system operators, and banking, insurance and securities firms have their own guidelines.
- Contracts and tenders. Government projects, enterprise clients and some partners write "data must stay in India" into their contracts, whatever the law says.
If any of this applies to you, ask your compliance adviser exactly which data must stay in India, including backups and logs, and choose your server region to match. A Mumbai VPS keeps the server itself in India; you still have to check where your backups, email, analytics and third-party tools store data.
When another region is the better choice
Mumbai is not automatically the right answer. Put the server close to the people and systems it actually serves:
- Audience mainly in Europe: choose Germany (included in the plan price) or the United Kingdom.
- Audience mainly in North America: choose US Central or US West.
- Audience in Japan or East Asia: choose Tokyo. Australia and New Zealand: choose Sydney.
- Global audience, mostly static content: the origin matters less if a CDN serves most of your files. Germany avoids a location fee.
- Background work: backup targets, build servers, scrapers, monitoring and staging boxes rarely need to be near users. Save the location fee.
- Off-site copies: a second server in a different region is a sensible home for backups of your Mumbai server, because one regional problem cannot take out both.
For a mixed audience, put the server near the majority and let a CDN handle static files for everyone else. Moving a live server between regions later is a migration job (new server, copy data, switch DNS), so it is worth choosing carefully at the start.
Is the Mumbai location fee worth paying?
HostEthical Cloud VPS plans include the Germany location in the plan price. India (Mumbai) and the other regions add a monthly location fee, shown at checkout before you pay. Whether that fee is worth it comes down to who is waiting on your server.
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Most visitors or customers are in India | Pay for Mumbai. Faster pages tend to mean fewer abandoned carts. |
| Game server or real-time app for Indian users | Pay for Mumbai. Latency is the whole experience. |
| Contract or regulator requires data in India | Mumbai is effectively required. |
| Mixed global audience, mostly static site behind a CDN | Germany is usually fine. |
| Dev box, backup target, cron jobs, CI | Germany. Spend the difference on more RAM or backups. |
A useful way to judge it: divide the monthly location fee by the number of orders, sign-ups or active players the server supports in a month. For a busy store or game server the cost per user is tiny compared with the value of a faster experience. For a hobby project with ten visitors a day, it may not be worth it.

How to measure latency yourself
Do not rely on anyone's marketing numbers, including ours. Once your server is running, measure from where your users actually are. From a Linux or macOS terminal:
# Ten pings to your server (use -n 10 on Windows)
ping -c 10 203.0.113.10
# Hop-by-hop route and packet loss (Linux: install the mtr package)
mtr -rwc 50 203.0.113.10
# Connection, TLS and time-to-first-byte for a real page
curl -o /dev/null -s -w "connect: %{time_connect}s tls: %{time_appconnect}s ttfb: %{time_starttransfer}s\n" https://example.in/
Replace the example IP and URL with your own. Test from broadband and from mobile data, and if you can, ask someone in another city to run the same commands. Watch the average and the worst result: a route with occasional packet loss can feel worse than a slightly longer, stable one.
Getting started with a Mumbai VPS
- Pick your OS. Ubuntu LTS is the safe default for most people; our guide to the best Linux OS for a VPS compares the options.
- Choose a plan and the India (Mumbai) location on the VPS page.
- Secure the server as soon as it is ready: SSH keys, a firewall and automatic security updates. Follow our step-by-step VPS setup guide.
- Point your domain to the server's IP with an A record. If you do not have a domain yet, a .in domain pairs naturally with an Indian server.
Remember that an unmanaged VPS means you look after the software, updates and security. If you want to understand what that involves, read managed vs unmanaged VPS before you order. Questions about locations or plans? Contact us and we will help you choose.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Mumbai VPS fast for users in South and East India?
Yes. Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata all connect to Mumbai over major domestic fibre routes, so users there usually see far lower latency than to servers in Europe or the US. Exact numbers depend on the visitor's ISP and routing.
Does server location affect SEO in India?
Only indirectly. Google treats server location as a weak hint at most, but a nearby server cuts time to first byte and speeds up pages, which helps user experience and Core Web Vitals.
Will a VPS in Mumbai give me an Indian IP address?
Yes. A server in a Mumbai data centre gets an IP address from that location, which normally geolocates to India, although some geolocation databases take time to update.
Is Singapore or Mumbai better for an Indian audience?
For visitors mainly in India, Mumbai is usually faster because traffic stays inside the country. Singapore can make sense when your audience is split between India and South-East Asia.
What is a good ping for a website or game server?
Under about 50 ms feels instant for most games and interactive apps, and under 100 ms is generally fine for websites. Beyond roughly 150 ms, users start to notice delays, especially on pages that cannot be cached.
